Pastor Iap Han Chiong
葉漢章牧師

Pastor Iap Han Chiong（葉漢章牧師), recognized as China's first pastor in Xiamen Amoy, was ordained on March 29, 1863 At the Bamboo Chapel in Xiamen, he found inspiration in the hymns introduced to him by REV. John Van Nest Talmage, D.D. (1819-1892) , a Dutch-American Reformed church missionary who dedicated from 1847 over 40 years to serving in Xiamen, Sio Kwe and Gulangyu Island. Talmage's influence encouraged Pastor Yip to translate, teach, and compile Amoy hymns for his congregation. Leveraging his Dutch heritage, he introduced the Do-re-mi system of singing, which Pastor Yip who cannot read musical transcript adapted into a numerical format. This innovative approach allowed hymns to be taught to a largely illiterate audience at the time, where with Rev Elihu Doty ( 1844-1865), he completed the Amoy Colloquial Dictionary Romanisation was later taught in the Norma school in Gulangyu and employed as a literacy skill set. The 300 hymns were the original hymn. The Xiamen Phonetic Dictionary compiled by Rev. John van Nest Talmage (打馬字牧師-1819-1892) is a dictionary compiled in Romanized Vernacular Chinese characters - POJ notation, and the titles are also written in vernacular Chinese characters. David Chi Beng Yap 葉志明, nicknamed “Achan” at home, a fourth-generation descendant of Pastor Ip Han Chiong (葉漢章), has been deeply connected to the rich tradition of Amoy hymns. This connection is rooted from his great-grandfather and grand aunts, who found inspiration in the teachings of the renowned American Reform Church missionary Rev John Van nest Talmage (打馬字牧師).

After completing his master's degree majoring in children voice and conducting at Princeton University USA, David made a heartfelt shift from conducting to reviving the 300 cherished hymns from his hometown along with his friends from Gulangyu Island Xiamen. He and his sister De Chin Dee Sycip (薛麗真）also a master degree graduate for voice and conducting from Princeton University; They turned these beautiful numerical hymns into musical notation, adding lovely harmonies along the way. Whilst there is computer for musical notations, The 500 hymn’s notation was carefully hand-painted note by note by an artist named Dakanay, while the elegant Romanized script known as POJ (白話字) was handwritten with great skill by his mother in law, Chun Lee Yu-Liuson (柳楊存理), his highly educated and musician mother in law making it easier for singers to pronounce the words.

In 1969, David suffered a devastating house fire that took everything—his home, business, overseas photos, and his beloved Stradivarius violin. A few years later, in 1972, he faced an even deeper heartbreak: the loss of his youngest daughter, Eleanor, to cancer before she turn six years old.

These tragedies marked him deeply, yet he found comfort and a renewed sense of purpose in not only bringing the 300 Amoy hymns back to life, he intended to increase it.

It became a beautiful way for him to honor God, accept His will, and transform his grief into uplifting worship and songs that celebrated the One to whom he dedicated his life of service.

Collaborating with Rev. Joseph Young 楊期耀 牧師, they thoughtfully curated an additional 200 hymns from a selection of 250. Together, they created a touching compilation of 500 AMOY hymns that celebrate the enduring spirit of faith and keep cherished Amoy hymn alive for the next generation.

Chun Lee Yu-Liuson
柳杨存理

Born to missionary parents, Chun Lee Yu-Liuson was sent to study at the Gulangyu Normal School, formally known as the Xiamen Female Teachers’ Normal School (廈門女子師範學校), established in 1906. Located on Gulangyu ( KOLONGSU) Island, this school was one of the earliest teacher training institutions in Fujian Province, dedicated to equipping young Chinese Christian women to become educators and leaders.

The curriculum emphasized not only academic instruction which Chun Lee achieved the highest honour, music education in playing piano and pedagogy, it also have Christian character formation and spiritual training under the guidance of missionary educators, which Rev John Van nest Talmage (打馬字牧師) was highly involved in.

At the time, Pe̍h-ōe-jī (POJ)—a Romanized script developed by missionaries for the Southern Min (Minnan) language—was widely used in church settings and Christian education throughout Xiamen and Gulangyu. Many textbooks, Bible passages, and hymns were printed in POJ, and students at the Normal School would likely have been trained to read and write in it, especially for ministry and literacy outreach among Minnan-speaking communities. POJ played a critical role in bridging local culture with Christian teaching, making it an essential tool in the education of students like Chun Lee, who were being prepared for teaching, evangelism, and social service in both urban and rural settings.

At age of 80, She was given the task to use the original POJ for the entire Amoy hymn 500 閩南聖詩羅馬- including all the reading response at the back of the hymn book.

柳杨存理（Chun Lee Yu-Liuson）
柳杨(楊)存理出生于(於)宣教士家庭, 自幼被送往 鼓浪屿女子师范学校 (*師範學校)厦门女子师范学校）（*廈門女子師範學校).

這學校是在1906年创(創)立, 是福建省最早的女子师范学校(廈門女子師範學校）之一, 致力于(於)培养(養)年轻(年輕)的中国(國)基督徒女性成为(為)教育者与(與)领(領)袖学校(學校)位于(於)鼓浪屿(鼓浪嶼-Gulangyu or Kolongsu), 由西方宣教士兴办(興辦)和西式教育与(與)基督信仰的培养(養).
